How To Research The History Of  A Structure.

Obtain the address of the property.

Get the Tax Parcel Number for the property

Get the current deed reference to the property.

Develop a chain of title back to the date at which your structure appeared, remember that the Grantee is the buyer and Grantor is the seller.

One of the best ways to get a "quick and dirty" date of construction is to use your address and look it up in a City Directory.

Sanborn Insurance Maps are especially helpful to view the layout of the neighborhood and to check the street name and number assigned to the property.

The current owner and the current tenant are not necessarily the same, but the owner's name will be on the Mecklenburg County tax records.

Use the Topozone.com link to obtain your U. T. M.

Drive to the property and take at least one photograph.

One of the best sources for discovering individuals associated with a property is to obtain a copy of Last Wills and Testaments.  Last Wills and Testaments are found in the Councy Clerk of Court Office.  They are indexed by Devisor and Devisee.

Another good source of information about individuals associated with a property are Birth and Death Certificates.  These are found in the Vital Statistics Office of the County.  Especially important are the death dates of individuals associated with the property.  Use that to acquire the newspaper obituary column.
