Thus, automobiles and trucks became the principal means of transportation through this area. Because Commonwealth Avenue is located directly off of Central Avenue, it received a lot of pass-through traffic. Also, until the 1990s, Independence Boulevard had curbside businesses. Brodt's Music Company is believed to have originally been an office building and then a warehouse before it became a place of business from which to purchase musical instruments.
