Briefly Summarizing Known History Of The Property:
Central Avenue was once a
major commercial corridor of Charlotte, NC. Thus, automobiles and trucks
became the principal means of transportation through this area. Seeing
as Commonwealth Avenue is located directly off of Central Avenue, it
received a lot of pass-through traffic. Inevitably, the epicenter of
heavy pass-through transportation, structures which catch colorful signs
which catered to the automobile such as motels and restaurants rapidly
became present throughout the area. The Penguin Drive-In is a prime
example of a colorful pre-1950's time. The Penguin Drive-In was
originally opened in the 1940's as an ice cream parlor, by a World War Two
veteran.
